California workplace injuries: Spine injury symptoms

Many employees in California suffer back injuries every year. While some of these injuries are relatively minor in nature and can be easily treated with rest, pain medication and rehabilitation, others may be more severe. Workplace injuries that directly affect the spine, for instance, can lead to a number of physical problems, even complete disability.

While many believe that only those who have labor intensive jobs are likely to suffer spinal cord injuries, that simply is not true. Such injuries can occur in any job setting, even to those who find themselves sitting for extended periods of time. However, the injuries suffered may be more severe for those in certain fields of work — simply due to the nature of their jobs.

When damage to the spinal column occurs, one might experience a number of symptoms. Some may be obvious and alarming, while others may seem mild in comparison. Common symptoms might include:

  • Loss of sensation
  • Pain
  • Exaggerated reflexes
  • Partial paralysis
  • Complete paralysis

Any of these symptoms may have temporary or even permanent consequences, making it challenging — and in some cases — impossible to return to work. California residents who have suffered workplace injuries that cause damage to their spines may utilize workers’ compensation benefits as they seek treatment. Not only can medical care be covered, but other financial losses may also be compensated due to loss of income and/or disability. By working with an experienced attorney from the very beginning of a work comp claim, one can take all the steps necessary to receive the full benefit for which he or she is eligible.
