California man crushed to death in workplace accident

As heavy as passenger vehicles are, they are nothing when compared to the weight of many construction vehicles. These heavy-duty vehicles are built to carry or move large amounts of materials. A workplace accident involving such machinery and equipment could easily prove fatal.

Anyone who works around such equipment for any length of time quickly learns the potential dangers involved. Even when safety precautions are taken, the chance of serious injury or death is possible. For example, a recent accident at a northern California construction equipment dealership resulted in the death of a 48-year-old mechanic.

The field services technician was under a front-end loader working on the tracks when it fell and crushed him. As a result, he suffered fatal injuries from which he did not survive. The California division of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, which investigates accidents in the workplace, will work to determine what caused the equipment to fall.

The dealership performs maintenance on large pieces of construction equipment such as excavators, graders and pavers, which it also sells. Something Cal/OSHA will be looking for is whether the company follows all applicable safety regulations for its business. Should any deficiencies be found, the company could face citations and fines.

As for the family of the mechanic who died in this workplace accident, they may be eligible for workers’ compensation benefits to help with the financial adjustments that come with the loss of a loved one. Benefits could cover the funeral and burial costs in addition to a compensation package related to the loss of the man’s income. Having at least some knowledge of the workers’ compensation system could ensure the family receives all of the benefits to which it is entitled.
